Long answer, I stumbled across the field while I sought a meaningful change in my career that blended my passion, curiosity, and ability. Turning the clocks back to the winter of 2021, I felt hopelessly drained and without future prospects as I shuffled through examining patent by patent. Something had to change. So, I reached out to my older brother for guidance.
“What gives you energy?”
I had waded through life hearing suggestions as advice, so these words were unexpected for me. Grandiose as this might sound, this question was actually what I needed. It took self-reflection but what kept bubbling to the surface of my mind was a hobby I picked up in 2016, Dungeons & Dragons. Since then, I have been a game master for countless friends and stories. It could drain me, but the passion never burnt out completely. I hadn’t really thought about why until then.

Turns it out it was writing for people to let them experience what they want that gives me energy. Fast forward to January 2022, I was enrolled in the UX Writing Hub’s UX Writing Academy course. Communicating my strategic choices for the words I chose based on analytical thinking felt exhilarating and natural. As a patent examiner, I had to examine the significance of each word within a claim and communicate the varied interpretations. Designing a content style guide was just like writing story elements based on my players’ desires as a game master and embodying the voice and tone in writing was just like acting in character.
So, here I am, charging up by writing words.
